Ellen Burton arrives in Africa to join Dr. Mary as her nurse, determined to bring modern medicine to the native peoples. She enlists the help of Lonni Douglas, an animal wrangler and fortune hunter, who reluctantly agrees to guide her upriver despite doubting her ability to endure Africa. Their journey is fraught with danger, including escaped gorillas, hostile tribes, infected animal wounds, and opposition from witch doctors. Amid these challenges, Ellen and Lonni develop a romantic bond, but their contrasting values threaten to end their relationship.
