The Westerner (1940)
In "The Westerner," Cole Harden (Gary Cooper) is accused of being a horse thief—a charge he faces before the infamous Judge Roy Bean (Walter Brennan). Jane-Ellen Matthews (Doris Davenport) defends Cole, insisting he doesn't look like a thief. Cole, aiming to win the jury’s favor, spends all his coins to buy them drinks and, while in the saloon, notices two portraits of Lily Langtry—the object of Judge Bean's obsession. Claiming to have met Lily and possess a lock of her hair, Cole manages to delay his hanging for two weeks. During this time, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between cattlemen and homesteaders—just as the celebrated Lily Langtry is set to arrive in Texas.
