Dr. Anton Drager (Rock Hudson) travels to Java to study the effects of leprosy under the guidance of Dr. Brits Jansen (Burl Ives), an expert on the subject. While the two men share scientific approaches, they differ profoundly in philosophy, as Drager does not share Jansen's belief in a higher power. After marrying his sweetheart Els (Gena Rowlands), Drager embarks on a perilous journey into the jungle to find Frolick (Philip Abbott), a river master who has gone missing and been driven mad by the shaman Burubi (Reggie Nalder). Drager finds Frolick and, in self-defense, is forced to kill him. Later, after rescuing another doctor in the region, Drager becomes lost in the wild himself. Near death and in a coma, he is eventually rescued.
