English trout fisherman Rudolf Rassendyll is one of the few tourists not visiting Strelsau for the coronation of Central-European King Rudolf V. By coincidence, Rudolf is a distant relative and bears a striking resemblance to the king. He is asked to impersonate Rudolf V, who has been drugged by his envious half-brother Michael in a plot to seize the throne. Rudolf must take part in the coronation and soon grows close to the royal bride, Princess Flavia. When the abducted king is discovered to be held at the castle of Zenda, Rudolf becomes entangled in a dangerous power struggle for the throne and the affections of Princess Flavia. Their efforts are further complicated by Michael's cunning co-conspirator, Rupert of Hentzau. Cast: - Stewart Granger as Rudolf Rassendyll / King Rudolf V - Deborah Kerr as Princess Flavia (Jean Simmons, Granger's then-wife, and Eleanor Parker were also considered for the role) - James Mason as Rupert of Hentzau (originally to be played by Richard Greene) - Louis Calhern as Colonel Zapt - Robert Coote as Fritz von Tarlenheim - Robert Douglas as Michael, Duke of Strelsau - Jane Greer as Antoinette de Mauban - Lewis Stone as the Cardinal (Stone played the dual lead role in the 1922 silent version) Runtime: 96 minutes
