The Mountain Road (1960)
Set in eastern China during 1944, U.S. Army Major Baldwin and his volunteer team of demolition engineers are tasked with slowing the Japanese advance by destroying bridges, roads, airfields, and munitions dumps. After blowing up an American airfield and ammo dump, the team is ordered to demolish a vital mountain bridge. Upon arrival, they coordinate with a Nationalist Chinese Army unit guarding the bridge, and at the request of the Chinese commander, they agree to also destroy a distant munitions dump and escort Madame Sue-Mei Hung, the widow of a Chinese colonel, to safety. Reluctantly, Major Baldwin agrees to these requests, and the team is joined by Colonel Kwan, a liaison officer and translator, who carries orders to assist their passage. As the demolition team undertakes its perilous journey, time is running out with Japanese forces rapidly closing in. Additionally, local Chinese refugees and bandits present unexpected threats, making their mission even more dangerous.
