Set in 1745 at the Durrisdeer estate in Scotland, brothers Jamie Durie (Errol Flynn) and Henry Durie (Anthony Steel) receive news of the Jacobite Rising alongside their father, Lord Durrisdeer (Felix Aylmer). Their loyal retainer, MacKellar (Mervyn Johns), advises that one brother join the uprising while the other supports King George II to safeguard the family's future, regardless of the outcome. Jamie wins a coin toss and joins the rebellion, despite the concerns of his fiancée, Lady Alison (Beatrice Campbell). After the defeat at Culloden, Jamie evades British soldiers and joins forces with Irish adventurer Colonel Francis Burke (Roger Livesey). They secretly return to Durrisdeer for funds to escape to France. Jamie’s mistress, Jessie Brown (Yvonne Furneaux), betrays him upon seeing him kiss Lady Alison, leading to Jamie being shot and presumed dead. While Jamie and Burke flee with smugglers to the West Indies and are captured by pirates led by Captain Arnaud (Jacques Berthier), Henry inherits the estate. Jamie allies with Arnaud, but after seizing a Spanish galleon from Captain Mendoza (Charles Goldner), Arnaud betrays him. Jamie kills Arnaud in a duel and commandeers the ship, returning to Scotland rich with pirate treasure. He confronts Henry during Henry’s betrothal celebration to Alison, sparking a conflict that results in Jamie and Burke’s capture and death sentence. Jessie sacrifices herself to enable their escape, and Alison chooses to join Jamie for an uncertain future.
