Set in 1848, the young Frenchwoman Madeline Minot travels to New York City to visit Thevenet, her fiancé's grandfather. Thevenet, a former associate of Napoleon, may support his grandson's political ambitions. However, Madeline discovers Thevenet living in despair, alongside a greedy housekeeper and butler eager to inherit his fortune—and possibly wishing him harm.
