Set in twelfth-century Lombardy, the region suffers under the rule of the German overlord, Count Ulrich 'The Hawk'. In the mountains, a group of guerillas continues to resist. Five years prior to the main events, Ulrich kidnapped the wife of young archer Dardo. Though Dardo remains cynical rather than embittered, he has little interest in joining the rebels—until his son is also taken from him. This turns the story into an adventure filled with lighthearted swashbuckling and romantic encounters, particularly with the beautiful hostage, Anne.
