The film's title is inspired by the flag of England's Outward Bound Sea School at Aberdovey, Wales. The story follows Mike Merriworth, a Merchant Navy hero of the Korean War, who returns to England after three years of captivity in Communist hands. Struggling with the effects of brainwashing and indoctrination, Mike accepts a position as an instructor at the Outward Bound Sea School. There, he is placed in charge of 'Nelson Watch,' a group of twelve boys from various backgrounds, including a juvenile delinquent, a dictatorial bully, and a boy afraid of heights. Mike's harsh command style and inability to empathize with the boys' problems, influenced by his own traumatic experiences, create tension and challenge within the group.
