Radcliffe-educated Caroline Bender, with her unofficial fiancé Eddie Harris away in England, takes her first job as a secretary at Manhattan's Fabian Publishing, which promises its employees 'the best of everything.' At Fabian, Caroline finds that her experience mirrors that of other women in the secretarial pool, many of whom are either waiting to get married or dreaming of a different life. Among them are aspiring actress Gregg Adams and naïve newcomer April Morrison, who soon become Caroline's roommates. As Caroline adjusts to her new role, she must navigate the demands of the firm's editors: the outwardly tough yet lonely Amanda Farrow, the aging playboy Fred Shalimar, and the compassionate but troubled Mike Rice.
