Harry Faversham is a sensitive young man traumatized by his father's war stories, which recount both heroic deeds and tales of cowardice ending in tragedy. Pressured by his father, Harry joins the Royal North Surrey Regiment and becomes engaged to Mary Burroughs, the daughter of General Burroughs, a family friend. After his father’s death, Harry is ordered with his regiment to join the Sudan Campaign. On the eve of their deployment, Harry resigns his commission, causing three fellow officers and his fiancée to send him white feathers as symbols of cowardice. Unable to bear this disgrace, Harry seeks redemption by traveling incognito to Sudan, aided by Dr. Sutton and Dr. Harraz. Disguised as a mute native whose tribe has been punished by General Kitchener’s forces, Harry undergoes extensive measures to hide his identity. As a native worker, Harry shadows his old regiment, now operating as a decoy. When a reconnaissance mission leaves Captain Durrance blinded by the harsh sun, Harry cares for his former rival. After warning the British of an impending attack—during which he is knocked unconscious and his comrades are captured—Harry embarks on a dangerous rescue mission into Omdurman to save his friends. The film’s plot revolves around Harry’s quest to redeem himself for the symbolic four feathers and the courage he displays in doing so.
