Audie Murphy stars as a young Jesse James, who falls under the influence of outlaw William Quantrill, played by Brian Donlevy. Jesse and his youthful gang join Quantrill's rebels to avenge the death of his parents, but soon become disillusioned by the senseless violence and looting of innocent civilians. Persuaded by Quantrill's companion, Jesse contemplates leaving until Union forces close in. Ultimately, Quantrill forces Jesse to escape, facing the Yankees alone. Jesse rides off with his gang, as history continues to unfold.
