Set in 1939 in the small English town of Penny Green, 'If Winter Comes' follows the lives of its residents as the events in Poland and the impending war begin to reshape their world. Mark Sabre, a writer of school textbooks, has married Mabel on the rebound after his true love, Nona, marries someone else. As war approaches, Nona returns to town with her husband Tony, and Mabel is determined to hold onto Mark. However, Mark's misunderstood good deeds and a friendship with a young girl cause gossip and upheaval in his life. The war soon brings loss not just to the front but to Penny Green as well, affecting everyone in the community.
