During a visit to London, 18-year-old American Melinda Greyton attends her first party—a Regimental ball—where she meets and quickly falls in love with Major Michael Curragh, a charming bachelor who reciprocates her feelings. Their whirlwind romance leads to marriage, but Melinda soon notices Michael’s unusual behavior, including his distress over trivial matters like an old overcoat being sent for cleaning or some missing bank notes. Eventually, Melinda discovers that Michael is actually a Communist spy, with deep ties to the Party since his youth. She confronts him and demands that he choose between their marriage or his political beliefs. Michael claims he will leave the Party, but it is merely a deception. Although he truly loves Melinda, when his superiors demand that he eliminate her to protect his secrets, Michael faces a heart-wrenching decision.
