Set near the end of World War II, Allied secret services intercept a message suggesting the Germans are attempting to develop atomic bombs. At a Midwestern university, scientist Professor Alvah Jesper is recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to contact his former colleague Dr. Katerin Lodor in Switzerland and bring her to North America. When the mission fails and Dr. Lodor is killed by the Nazis, she reveals that Dr. Giovanni Polda, an acquaintance of Alvah's, is collaborating with the Nazis in Italy. Determined to thwart the enemy, Jesper travels to Italy with the help of Italian partisans led by Pinkie and Gina. He arranges a meeting with Dr. Polda, who is being watched by the Gestapo. Polda tells Jesper that his daughter Maria has been kidnapped, prompting Jesper to strike a deal—if Jesper helps free Maria, Polda will come to North America. As Pinkie works to rescue Maria, Jesper and Gina develop a romantic connection amidst the chaos.
