Carbine Williams tells the true story of David Marshall 'Marsh' Williams, the inventive mind behind the renowned M-1 Carbine rifle used in World War II. Marsh, a man known for his independent spirit, is arrested for distilling moonshine and convicted of shooting a federal officer—resulting in a sentence on a chain gang. Eventually, he is transferred to a prison farm overseen by Captain H.T. Peoples, a fair but disciplined warden who believes in rehabilitation. Recognizing Marsh's potential, Captain Peoples offers him the chance to work in the prison tool shop during his spare time. There, Marsh uses his ingenuity to design and build a working rifle within the confines of the prison.
