Set in 1787, "Botany Bay" follows prisoners from London's Newgate Gaol as they are transported to New South Wales. Among them is Hugh Tallant, an American medical student who was falsely imprisoned. While at sea, Tallant's escape attempt provokes the cruel Captain Gilbert to plan his return to England on mutiny charges. The arrival of plague and other dramatic events keep Tallant occupied in New South Wales.
