Schoolteacher and family man Ed Avery is plagued by severe pain and blackouts. After being hospitalized, he is diagnosed with a rare inflammation of the arteries and told he has only months to live. Ed agrees to undergo experimental treatment with the hormone cortisone. He makes a remarkable recovery and returns home to his wife Lou and their son Richie, required to take cortisone tablets regularly to prevent a relapse. However, his 'miracle' cure soon becomes a nightmare as Ed begins abusing the medication, leading to wild and dangerous mood swings.
