Charles Engle, caught embezzling, writes a suicide note and wanders through the city. Small-time hustler Bill O'Brien notices Engle's generous tipping and assumes he's wealthy, planning to lure him into a high-stakes card game to swindle him. Bill enlists Nina Barone to help, though she's more interested in Bill than the scheme itself. Meanwhile, an inebriated and struggling playwright, Gene Gibbons, discovers Engle's suicide note. Gibbons teams up with a reluctant O'Brien to concoct a plan to help Engle win back the money he stole, offering a last chance at redemption.
